Koller Unfazed By Poor Ahly Record In South Africa

Al Ahly head coach Marcel Koller is not concerned they have never won a game in South Africa ahead of facing Orlando Pirates in the CAF Champions League on Saturday.

The Red Devils are the dominant force in African football with a record 12 titles to their name but have a poor record in South Africa with eight draws, seven defeats and zero wins in their 15 trips.

Equally, Pirates edge them in their head-to-head record with three wins, two draws and one defeat in their six meetings on the continent.

“It’s right we haven’t played as many games as Orlando Pirates, but it may be an advantage for us because we are fresh and not mentally tired, the other point, you’re right Al Ahly has never won here but it might be the right moment now to win,” Koller said.

“We prepared our players to end this run of history, and maybe we meet each other tomorrow after the game and we talk about this statistic [of not winning in South Africa] again.”

Koller said the only way they would walk away from Orlando happy with a point is if they produce an impressive performance to go with it.

“We prepared our players to win this game and to give their best side of them and after the game if it’s a draw with a point against Pirates having played well, with a lot of chances created, we will accept that also,” he said.

“But ahead of the game, we are concentrating on preparation to try and win this game.”

The two sides lock horns at Orlando Stadium, in a sold out affair at 15h00 on Saturday.
