Morena: There’s Light At The End Of The Tunnel

Mamelodi Sundowns wing-back Thapelo Morena has described reaching the CAF Champions League final as a moment of mixed emotions, admitting the continental title is a medal that has long eluded him and the club.

Sundowns booked their place in the final following their two-legged semi-final victory, and Morena was reflective on what the achievement means after years of near-misses on the continent.

“It’s mixed emotions [getting to the final again], knowing we’re going to have to work very hard and getting here, was a very good mission, we’ve done our level best to grind on the pitch and also to give it all to the supporters,” Morena said.

The experienced utility-player acknowledged that the Champions League title has been a lingering source of frustration for both himself and the squad, despite Sundowns consistently performing at the highest level on the continent.

“I think it’s one of the medals that has been haunting [me], also for the team, because it’s been a long time not getting anything from the Champions League despite doing very well,” he said.

“I think this time, the good thing is we know what we’re looking at and we can [see] there’s light at the end of the tunnel.”

Sundowns last won the CAF Champions League in 2016, and the club has been consistently among the continent’s elite sides since, making their pursuit of a second continental crown one of South African football’s most compelling storylines.
