Riveiro On Linesman’s Offside Calls

Orlando Pirates head coach Jose Riveiro suggested they could have had four more goals in their two-legged tie over Disciples.

This was a reference to the linesman during the away game in Mauritius and at Orlando where Pirates were adjudged to have been offside several times after putting the ball in the back of the net.

While the Spaniard stopped short of stating it was incorrect decisions – he lamented the frequency of the disallowed goals over their CAF Champions League preliminary-round victory over the Malagasy Premier League champions.

“Yes [I thought it could have been more goals], it was pretty much the same, funny enough in the first leg [constant offside calls], a lot of goals were disallowed through offside, it’s a consequence of the way they play,” Riveiro said after the 4-0 win on Friday evening.

“They play offside, in the last line they are aggressive in man marking, they try to use that tools, the results to defend, I think we scored four more goals [that were disallowed], I’m not sure if it was correct or not.

“But anyway, I think we still… in the first 30 minutes, we produced many situations to score it was the same in the first leg, but overall, we’re happy with the performance and the fact we didn’t concede one goal in the two games, it’s something to celebrate, it makes things much easier.”

Pirates will now face African Stars of Jwaneng Galaxy in the next round of the competition for a place in the group stages.
