Orlando Pirates head coach Jose Riveiro says the fact that the side is returning to a historic venue in the CAF Champions League is just that history as they aim to get three points against Stade d’Abidjan.
The two meet at Stade Félix Houphouët Boigny where Pirates lifted the trophy in 1995 against ASEC Mimosas, but this time in a Group C encounter this afternoon.
Riveiro’s side are second in the group locked on four points with Al Ahly who they held last week after two matches. Their hosts are at the bottom of the Group with no points from the same number of games.
The Spaniard coach said as much as the history is important, the current group of Buccaneers are out to also make their own history of winning the match after a tough start to the campaign.
“Obviously we are representing Orlando Pirates wherever we go, we are the first team in our country to get this star here,” said Riveiro at a press conference.
“So it’s just talking about the club’s dimension but right now it’s just history. We are here to live our journey and to try to write our own history with the club.
“But we are not going far from the fact we are going to play one game tomorrow important three points and understanding the difficulty of the task that we will face.
“We had a tough beginning of the group stages, one game away with Belouizdad where we managed to perform in an excellent way.
“An interesting game one week ago against Al Ahly in Orlando where we managed to cope with one of the best teams in the continent if not the best and here we are right now with the intention to performing to our best [at this venue].”
The two sides meet in the capital city at 18h00.
