Bafana Bafana winger Elias Mokwana’s influence and popularity with Esperance Sportive de Tunis is growing game by game and has now earned praise from a national icon.
Mokwana, 25, joined Esperance ahead of the new season after shining with Sekhukhune United and breaking into the senior South Africa national team.
His move was met with scepticism with a meteoric rise from the amateur ranks to one of the biggest clubs on the continent within three years, but he appears to be thriving in his new environment with the four-time Champions League winners.
Aymen Balbouli, a legend of Taraji’s fierce rivals Etoile du Sahel, who won for CAF inter-club titles with the club was left impressed by his performance alongside Algeria star Youcef Belaïli in Rades this weekend as they downed Pyramids 2-0.
“Players like Belaili and Mokwana with their technical quality are able to make a difference,” he said on Attessia Sport.
“You can see it in 1v1 situations and whenever they have the ball they can bring value offensively at any moment of the game for Esperance.”
In the same segment, two-time CAF Confederation Cup winner Abdelkarim Nafti stated that it’s evident Mokwana is bringing extra quality to the club with his high energy, work rate and ability to press the opposition in Africa’s elite club competition.
Mokwana has been a revelation in the Champions League with three goals and an assist in four games, with three being from the starting line-up.
