Zungu Speaks Up Over Current Bench Role At Sundowns

Mamelodi Sundowns star midfielder Bongani Zungu has addressed his current situation at the club, which has seen him stay on the bench more often than many thought.

Zungu, 30, returned to Chloorkop after his contract with Ligue 2 side Amiens had run out.

Many believed a player with his pedigree would be a regular feature in the Masandawana starting XI but he has struggled for regular game-time this campaign so far.

Zungu, though, seems to be closer to the starting XI in 2023, having featured in four of the club’s last five games after putting in extra-shifts during the 2022 FIFA World Cup break to overcome some fitness issues.

He now discussed his role at Masandawana, saying he needs to continue to impress the coach in training and grab his chance when it comes.

“Well, I made a decision to come back and play for one of the biggest teams in Africa,” he said during a pre-match press conference ahead of his side’s CAF Champions League clash at Coton Sport.

“A team with a growing ambition to succeed and compete against the best in Africa and since I’ve left Mamelodi Sundowns and come back, there has been a tremendous improvement in all corners of the club and the players that we have now have a big, big quality.

“For me, it has been just about working hard and I’m playing for a team that is doing very well. It doesn’t matter who starts, it’s up to the coach who always starts.

“As I just mentioned for me, it’s just to continue working hard, be patient and wait for my chance, and when that chance does come to grab it with both hands.”

Sundowns beat Al Hilal in their CAFCL opener, while Coton Sport and Al Ahly’s match got postponed due to the Egytian’s participation at the FIFA Club World Cup.

Another win on Friday in Cameroon would put Downs in a strong position in Group B ahead of their double header against Al Ahly.
