SuperSport’s Hopes Of CAFCC KO’s Ends

SuperSport United’s hopes of reaching the CAF Confederations Cup knockout stages ended after the 1-1 draw against Modern Future at the Peter Mokaba stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The result sees United in third position in Group A with four points from five matches while the Egyptian side are in second position and a foot in the knockout stage with nine points from the number of games.

The encounter started cagey but United found spaces and could have found the opener in the sixth minute from a Shandre Campbell corner however there wasn’t anyone to finish. Ahmed Atef Mohamed could have broken the deadlock 10 minutes later with only Ricardo Goss to beat but the former shot over the bar.

The hosts wasted another corner in the 21st minute with Future getting ahead through Ali Zazaa in the 30th minute. Matsatsantsa who had more possession could have equalised from a corner three minutes later but the Future goalkeeper scrambled to make a save. Etiosa Ighodaro could have also levelled just before halftime but he shot high over the bar leaving the side trailing at the break.

Gavin Hunt wrung in three changes at the start of the second half and it could have paid off immediately from a corner. Campbell found Aphiwe Baliti whose short was punched away and substitute Thulani Hlatswayo’s second ball was also saved. Hunt’s men finally got an equaliser in the 69th minute when Baliti crossed to Tendamudzimu Matodzi and he headed home. Ighodaro could have given United a lead in the 75th   minute but his bicycle kick attempt saw him shoot over the bar.

SuperSport still have a last group match away at USM Alger next month and even if they win that encounter they can only reach seven points and won’t progress.
