Tinkler On City Selling Their Best Players

Cape Town City head coach Eric Tinkler says they remain an ambitious club despite selling their best players, which is a club policy.

The former Bafana Bafana is targeting his first trophy at City since returning to the club in 2021. City reached the MTN8 final in 2021 but unfortunately lost to Mamelodi Sundowns on penalties and have been struggling in cup competitions since as they could only reach the Wafa Wafa cup semifinal two months ago.

When Tinkler was asked if selling quality players to other clubs doesn’t affect his plan of wanting to win a trophy, he stated that the policy of the club doesn’t allow them to stand in front of anyone who wants to make his life better.

“I don’t think it’s about keeping the club on a float,” Tinkler told the media.

“Like I said, we are a club that is very ambitious but at the same, we are a club that never stands in the way of someone wanting their future and obviously players that have moved on have gone on to better things and obviously the club has profited from them.

“That’s a part of the club policy [selling best players] and we will always be that I think that will never change. The harsh reality for me as a coach or whoever comes after me, I don’t think that will change.

“Every season, if we are fortunate, as long as we have good seasons and players are putting in good performances, they can get opportunities to move on.

“Now, it’s about our scouting the planning, the placing, and making sure those players match the qualities of what you’ve just sold and what you bringing in fits the model that you play.

“And sometimes for me as a coach it’s a bit difficult, you need time but, in this sport, we know there’s no time.

“That’s a harsh reality. I’ve grown to live with it and grow with it. I am happy to see when players move on because it means I’ve helped them grow as a player and better their future. I don’t think that should change.”
