SSU Edge Downs To Keep DDC Title Chase Alive

10-man SuperSport United edged Mamelodi Sundowns 3-2 to claim the Tshwane Derby bragging rights in Saturday afternoon’s DStv Diski Challenge at Dr Molemela Stadium.

It was the blue side of the capital that took the lead in the 20th minute from Tumelo Machete who calmly converted from the spot after they were awarded a penalty to make it 1-0.

Sundowns clawed their way back into the match and found the equalizer through Oarabile Booysen’s beautiful effort in the 36th minute as the sides headed down the tunnel level on terms.

There was not a lot to write home about in the second period until the 71st minute when second-half substitute Thabang Makubo pounced on a loose ball after SuperSport were denied by the post to make it 2-1.

Masandawana made it 2-2 in the 83rd minute after the referee pointed to the spot with Tshiamo Masisi converting the resulting spot kick.

When it looked like the sides would share the spoils, SuperSport were given a penalty which Makubo converted in the 89th minute to see out the three points.

The was however late drama as Jabu Matsio was given his marching orders after his second yellow card of the afternoon.

The late win sees Matsatsantsa leapfrog both Sundowns and Orlando Pirates into third spot with the latter contesting Sunday’s Soweto Derby with fierce rivals Kaizer Chiefs.

In the other tie of the afternoon, Stellenbosch FC gave struggling Chippa United a real football lesson with a 9-1 hammering with Cheswyn Philander becoming the talking point after netting five goals. Kyle Bailey and Tauriq Gamaldien scored a brace each to complete the nine goals.

Stellies moved to first place with 50 points, two points clear of Amakhosi, who will face the Buccaneers tomorrow afternoon.

Saturday results:

Chippa United 1-9 Stellenbosch FC
Magesi FC 0-1 TS Galaxy
Mamelodi Sundowns 2-3 SuperSport United
