Doctor – Pirates Star One Of The Greatest Players SA Produced

Orlando Pirates attacker Patrick Maswanganyi has received huge plaudits from Bafana Bafana and Kaizer Chiefs legend Doctor Khumalo, who labeled him as ‘one of the greatest players SA produced’.

‘Tito’ was one of the Buccaneers’ standout performers during the 2023/24 campaign, aiding the club to an MTN8 and Nedbank Cup double. The club also qualified for the CAF Champions League after finishing second behind champions Mamelodi Sundowns.

His exploits have seen him nominated for four PSL awards – DStv Premiership Player’s Player of the Season, DStv Premiership Midfielder of the Season, MTN8 Last Man Standing and Nedbank Cup Player of the tournament. He also earned a national team call-up to Bafana head coach Hugo Broos’ side for the ongoing FIFA 2026 World Cup Qualifiers.

“One of the greatest players that we have ever produced and we thank Orlando Pirates obviously for giving him the opportunity because I think that’s where his game started to unveil and started to change,” ‘Mdokies’ said on Sports Night Amplified With Andile Ncube.

“I’ve seen an unbelievable left-footed player that has a big heart. A player that can carry the team – only if also we allow him to be himself.

“We don’t have to restrict the likes of Themba [Zwane], Tito, you know. Let them be themselves. Let them be players that can take us forward because you still have like your [Bathusi] Aubaas or [Teboho] Mokoena and [Sphephelo] Sithole that can be like defensive middle-fielders for them you know.

“But, Tito, I would like to believe that he will like give us a positive results or if not results, he will give us what we expect out of him.”

Broos leads his charges against a wounded Zimbabwean side on Tuesday after they fell to a disappointing 2-0 loss against Lesotho, while South Africa held Nigeria to a 1-1 draw away from home.
