Kaizer Chiefs got back to winning ways in the DStv Premiership with teenager Wandile Duba scoring a stunner on his full debut in the 1-0 victory over Golden Arrows at FNB Stadium on Tuesday evening.
Cavin Johnson made five changes to the side that laboured to a 0-0 with Moroka Swallows over the weekend, with Duba handed his first start and repaying the faith with a stunning curling effort past a standstill Sifiso Mlungwana after 10 minutes.
It proved to the catalyst to awake the crowd that made their way to the Calabash for the midweek game and Chiefs appeared rather lively, and limiting Arrows to the odd counter which Bruce Bvuma was able to handle.
But the visitors started the second half like a house on fire, carving Chiefs open twice in the opening five minutes, but Knox Mutizwa was guilty of firing the second one over Bvuma’s crossbar with the goal mouth gaping.
It proved a period of sustained pressure and an enforced injury change of Duba, and Christian Saile making way for Jassond Gonazlez and Ashley du Preez hardly helped stem the tide as Mabhuti Khanyeza’s side showed hunger to get back into the game.
Chiefs remain in sixth place despite the win level on 29 points with Orlando Pirates, who face Cape Town Spurs tomorrow – ahead of the Soweto Derby.
Meanwhile, Arrows have suffered 11 consecutive defeats across all competitions and now drop to 11th, with 23 points.
