Johnson Explains Surprise Sithebe Decision

Kaizer Chiefs head coach Cavin Johnson has explained why he opted to hand Siyethemba Sithebe his second appearance of the season.

Sithebe, 31, had only made one appearance for Chiefs this season, which came in a 2-1 defeat to Mamelodi Sundowns in August.

But in the absence of the suspended Yusuf Maart and Edson Castillo, Johnson opted to field Sithebe as one of the replacements in the goalless draw at Cape Town City on Saturday.

“I don’t know why he’s only played one game,” Johnson replied when asked by iDiski Times about why he opted for Sithebe.

“I think since I’m there he’s been waiting in the wind, he’s been waiting to play.

“And today he gets his chance and I have to give him credit, 10 out of 10, he’s done well today and maybe he’s playing there for the next 10 games.

“I always said this, I’ll try and give everybody an opportunity to play while I’m here. And if they play and do well, and it shows you why the club bought them initially.”

When asked whether Sithebe only played because of Maart and Castillo’s absence, Johnson cryptically stated that he might keep them out of the line-up going forward.

“I think you make a good obversation, in the game previously Castillo and Maart keep him out of the team,” he added.

“The fact that they’re not available gives him an opportunity and when that comes, I don’t know if Castillo or Maart will ever come back.

“He played well and we have to see who the next opponent is.”
