Kaizer Chiefs interim coach Cavin Johnson has explained he opted to replace Brandon Petersen with Itumeleng Khune to protect the goalkeeper after his recent blunders.
Petersen went into the 2023/24 season as the club’s number one but he’s made some mistakes that led to goals in the first half of the campaign.
While Johnson initially stuck wit Petersen in his first game in charge, he fielded veteran Khune in Wednesday’s 3-2 win over Cape Town Spurs.
“Brandon it’s a psychological thing. It could’ve happened to Khune, it could’ve happened to Bvuma,” he said after the match.
“But we need to protect what belongs to us and sometimes we have to make those decisions in order to protect the players for the future.
“I think he’ll just get stronger and stronger.”
Chiefs have moved into seventh place on the log, with 14 points after 11 games, which is two more than rivals Orlando Pirates, who have two games in hand.
Both teams will meet each other in the Soweto Derby on Saturday.
