Kaizer Jr Explains Why Chiefs Opted To Play After Fleurs Tragedy

Kaizer Chiefs Sporting Director Kaizer Motaung Jr has given insight into why the club chose to go ahead with their DStv Premiership fixture against Chippa United so soon after Luke Fleurs’ death.

Fleurs was killed on Wednesday in a hijacking, news that shocked the football fraternity, and everyone at Chiefs in particular.

The former Ubuntu and SuperSport United defender had only joined Chiefs last year, and was still to make his debut for the club.

Motaung said they spoke to the players, and it was their decision to push forward and play the game in honour of Fleurs.

“The guys are committed more than ever, like I said they understand the opportunity they have,” Motaung Jr said on Game On

“And like we said earlier it was a case of, ‘Guys you got to let us know how you feeling where’s your head at,’ it hurts.

“And they understand that they have a responsibility not just to their families, but they have a responsibility to the greater Khosi nations, all these millions of fans who support them on a daily basis.

“They have a responsibility to Luke’s family, to Luke himself and they took it upon themselves to say that we are ready to fight and we are lifting our heads and we’re marching forward. So they’re committed and they are ready to face Chippa United this weekend.”

Chiefs will meet Chippa at the Buffalo City Stadium in East London at 15:00 on Saturday. The PSL have confirmed to hold a minute of silence in Fleurs’ memory.
