McGregor Cites Liverpool Over Chiefs’ Coaching Issue

Kaizer Chiefs’ legendary former striker Shane McGregor has questioned why his ex-club are still without a head coach, saying they could have taken a leaf from Liverpool following the exit of Jurgen Klopp.

Amakhosi haven’t had a permanent first-team coach since they showed Molefi Ntseki the exit door in October 2023, just eight months into his three-year contract.

The club roped in Head of Youth Cavin Johnson in the interim but he could not turn the club’s fortunes around as they finished the 2023/24 DStv Premiership campaign without a trophy, and endured the club’s worst-ever finish in position 10.

Even thought this publication understands Chiefs have agreed terms with Nasreddine Nabi and waiting for his Throne Cup semi-final on 23 June, McMgregor is of the notion that the Naturena-based outfit has set itself up for failure by delaying the announcement of a new coach.

“It affects everything. Like you say, it is June, and there is no coach, so how do you start preparing for a season when you don’t have a coach? he said.

“What does the coach want, how does he want to play, how does he want to change things? Does he want the players he’s got? Does he not want the players? Things like that.

“I know they are talking to a lot of people but you are so right they haven’t done it. I mean, Liverpool knew they were losing Klopp. They already had the guy a long time ago. Obviously, they’ve got to wait for his work permit, but that’s not going to stop him from being at the club and arranging things and doing what he wants to do pre-season because that’s the biggest thing.

“If you don’t have a good pre-season you are gone, you are history, you are already on the back foot straight away. So yeah (sighs), they’ve got to get their act together simple. The management needs to wake up.”
