Teko – Pitso Could Thrive At Chiefs On One Condition

Former Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns star Teko Modise has insisted Kaizer Chiefs would need to give Pitso Mosimane the freedom to change the squad should they opt to appoint South Africa’s most successful coach.

Modise has been playing under Mosimane for many, many years and won seven trophies under ‘Jingles’ at Sundowns. He knows the South African tactician and what he do better than many others.

With Mosimane continuously being linked with the vacant head-coach job at Amakhosi, iDiski Times asked Modise whether Mosimane could turn the club’s fortunes around – but he also put the onus on the players, saying chopping and changing coaches alone won’t solve the issues at Naturena before pointing out the major condition Mosimane would need to thrive.

“Look, I’ve worked with coach Pitso my entire playing career, maybe most of it. And I know his work ethic and his ideology behind football,” he told David Kappel in this week’s iDiski Times.

“Of course, he’s done wonders for everything that he coached, coach Pitso Mosimane, his track record speaks for itself.

“But yet again, when are we gonna speak about the players taking responsibility, because it’s always about coaches getting fired, and coaches getting hired. But the common denominator is always the players who are the ones that are playing.

“So when coach Pitso came to Sundowns, he became successful, and he had an opportunity to be able to change the whole squad. If he goes, if any coach goes to Kaizer Chiefs, if he’s able to do that, then maybe there’s a chance that he might be successful. But with Sundowns, it was unique. Not every team is able to do that.”

Modise, though, also insisted that clubs do go through bad spells – even Sundowns did – and he hopes Amakhosi can bounce back soon.

“I would say because I’ve been in football for such a long time that there’s always a spell, teams do go through the slump,” he added.

“And it’s just unfortunate that when you’re Kaizer Chiefs you’re such a big brand and a big name, so you’re always under scrutiny. And I strongly believe that they’ll be able to bounce back.

“I mean such things have happened also to Sundowns. There was a time at Sundowns when there were fans outside the gate chasing the coach. We were not winning anything, nobody remembers those things.

“Because once you start doing more, we all forget about the bad things that have happened. But I think with what’s happening right now, it can only make them stronger, it can only make them better. And I just hope that we’ll be able to bounce back as soon as possible.”
