Former Manchester United first team coach Benni McCarthy has questioned the massive criticism and scrutiny a player like Marcus Rashford receives in comparison to the likes of Cole Palmer and Nicolas Jackson.
McCarthy worked closely with Rashford during his two years as striker’s coach and was credited with the United forward hitting a career-high of 30 goals in the 2022/23 campaign, which was the South African’s first season at the club.

However, Rashford wasn’t able to keep up those figures in 2023/24, netting just eight times across all competitions.
McCarthy, though, has defended Rashford and questioned the over-the-top criticism and scrutiny he receives compared to some of his peers.
“You know Rashford is only 27. That strike force is young! They’ve got a young squad but the amount of pressure and scrutiny that they get under is crazy,” he told iDiski Times.
“Whereas you don’t see that with any other players at any other teams, Cole Palmer is now scoring goals and that, but if he goes through a patch, the media won’t criticise or scrutinise him that much.

“Nicolas Jackson is the main striker at Chelsea, he doesn’t score every week. He goes through patches where loads of games he doesn’t score, but you never hear a single thing.
“Let Rashford just do that for one game, and then aaaah, they bring up all the stats and all that. So yeah, so I think just pressure from Man United is far greater than anywhere else.”
