Berg On Cardoso’s Mandate At Sundowns

Mamelodi Sundowns Sporting Director Flemming Berg says Miguel Cardoso’s mandate is to win every competition the club competes in.

Cardoso replaced Manqoba Mngqithi as head coach at the club on Tuesday in a press briefing that took place at Chloorkop this afternoon.

The decision doesn’t come as a surprise, with Mngqithi never actually being appointed officially as the head coach by the club, but in fact as interim after Rulani Mokwena’s exit.

Incoming Cardoso knocked Sundowns out of the Champions League semi-final last season with wins home and away but was sacked by Taraji this season after an indifferent start to the 2024/25 campaign.

“First… the mandate for any head coach at Mamelodi Sundowns is very clear, it’s to win every competition we are taking part in,” Berg said when asked by iDiski Times about his mandate after replacing Mngqithi as the leader of the club.

“If that’s a possibility for the Club World Cup, I will let other people make that evaluation, but in general, that’s the mandate for all coaches at Mamelodi Sundowns and also the mandate for coach Miguel.

“When it comes to the past and things, I work very clearly on a specific model, the GPS model. I don’t know if you’ve heard about it before, but GPS isn’t where things should be, and it is not necessarily where it needs to go – it’s knows exactly where things are.

“You have to know as a leader, exactly where you are at that particular moment because then you know where you are going and how you are going to get there, and that was the decision made by the board and by the [Motsepe] family – and of course, we all support that.

“I’m sure we have taken the right steps to take Mamelodi Sundowns to an even higher level than you have seen before, it’s what we trust and believe in.”

Cardoso will now lead Sundowns against Raja Atheltic Club as they seek their first win in the group stage after draws against Maniema Union at home and ASFAR in Morocco.
