Broos Breaks Silence On Tunisia Speculation

Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has denied he’s set to vacate his role to take over the Tunisia national team.

Broos, 71, has been strongly linked with moves to the Carthage Eagles since ousting them in the group stage at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

Algeria, who have since appointed Vladmir Petkovic, were also rumoured to be keen on his services and Club Brugge his homeland have been credited as suitors.

And ahead of facing Les Verts on Tuesday, reports eminated in Tunisian media stating Broos has agreed to succeed Jalal El Kadri ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers in June.

Although Broos denies any official contact, iDiski Times understands the Belgian was offered a wage cut of around $35,000 per month with $15,000 for the additional technical staff he wished to rope into the set-up.

The lure of being closer to his family in Belgium with around a three-hour flight was one of the considerations for the coach who was approached by Tunisia in 2021 before rejecting the offer.

However, this time around the reports stated he would just need to resign from his role with the South African Football Association (SAFA) but he’s since distanced himself from the speculation.

“There is no contact between me and the Tunisian Federation. If I believe the Tunisian media, I am a candidate. If I leave South Africa, the Federation will decide, for me it’s just rumours,” Broos said.

“There’s no contact or discussion between me and Tunisia. It’s just the rumour. I’m one of the candidates – according to Tunisian media, but it’s not official. I will be with Bafana Bafana in June [FIFA World Cup qualifiers].”

After the rousing 3-3 draw with Algeria, Bafana and Broos will now prepare for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Nigeria and Zimbabwe in June.
