Le Roux Saves Best For Last As Pompey Boss Hails Bafana Midfielder

It has been a season defined by patience, frustration and fleeting opportunity but Luke Le Roux may finally be signing off his debut campaign at Portsmouth with the kind of performances that justify the faith the club placed in him.

After Pompey secured their Championship survival earlier in the week, head coach John Mousinho made wholesale changes at Stoke City’s Bet365 Stadium, handing Le Roux a rare start in their 3-1 triumph.

The South African midfielder seized the moment, earning an impressive rating of 8 out of 10 from the club’s match reporter, and drawing warm praise from his manager in the aftermath via The News.

Mousinho was unequivocal in his assessment, noting that Le Roux has been one of the unlucky ones this season.

“He has been incredibly unlucky to not play more games,” he said. “He was excellent against Norwich, but I thought Stoke was his best performance in a Pompey shirt.”

Coming from a manager who has not always found it easy to fit Le Roux into his plans, those words carry real weight.

The 25-year-old central midfielder joined Portsmouth on 25 July 2025 on a three-year deal, having previously played in Sweden with IFK Värnamo and in the Dutch Eredivisie with Volendam.

Mousinho described him upon arrival as “a holding midfielder who likes to sit in and dictate the play,” adding that he is “physically strong and can also handle the ball.”

The building blocks for success were clearly there from day one; the challenge was simply getting Le Roux onto the pitch consistently enough to show it.

Deadline Day Signing With No Pre-Season

That challenge proved more difficult than anyone anticipated. Mousinho acknowledged early on that the transition was complicated by the fact that Le Roux had still been playing in Sweden when the deal was negotiated, leading to several weeks without proper training as he waited for work permits and international clearance.

There were periods where Le Roux was left out of the match-day squad entirely, though Mousinho was always careful to stress that there were no concerns about the midfielder’s attitude or application, describing him as “a very good trainer” and “a nice, young lad.”

The numbers tell a stark story: Le Roux was an unused substitute in 25 Championship matches across the campaign, completing the full 90 minutes in just two of his five starts – while he also managed a couple of starts in the FA Cup including the clash against Arsenal.

One of those full outings came at Norwich, a 1-1 draw in which Mousinho was pleased with what he described as an “unspectacular” display, and meant that as a compliment.

“He was very tidy, won his challenges well and played forward when he could,” Mousinho said at the time. “I thought he looked sharp, he looked tidy, he did his defensive job really well.”

But it is the Stoke performance that the Pompey manager now points to as the defining moment of Le Roux’s first season in English football.

With talks over players’ futures set to take place in the coming weeks, Mousinho has made clear that decisions will be based on the campaign as a whole – which means Le Roux’s strong end to the season could not have come at a better time.
