Maluleka Opens Up On Controversial Chiefs Exit

Former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder George Maluleka has finally opened up on his unceremonious club exit in 2020, saying he wanted to win the league with Amakhosi but failed to agree on terms.

Maluleka, 35, was into his sixth season with Amakhosi having joined them from SuperSport United in 2014, but all went south when he announced that he was leaving the club to join rivals Mamelodi Sundowns.

The news did not go down well with the Khosi faithful who criticized the player for not being loyal to the Chiefs brand and chasing after the bag.

Fast-forward to four years later, “Mido” admits that he has comes to terms with being blamed for Chiefs’ last-day title collapse.

Speaking to Robert Marawa on 947, the former AmaZulu player says he had planned to finish that season with the Glamour Boys though things turned out otherwise.

“The timing? I can’t say it was right or wrong, “he told Marawa when quizzed about what exactly transpired around the contractual situation at Chiefs.

“It wasn’t my decision to make to be honest.

“It happened and that’s how it went down. It was my decision to go to Sundowns but not at that point.

“If you remember, there was still that [bio-]bubble and I couldn’t be involved in the bubble because of the offer that was made on the other side.

“I won trophies at Chiefs, I won trophies at SuperSport, I just missed out on Ajax [Cape Town]. So, I won trophies at Chiefs. It had nothing to do with the offer [from Sundowns being too good].

“I wanted to finish what I had started, which is to win the league and then move out, and that couldn’t happen unfortunately.

“It was unfortunate because we couldn’t agree on terms.

“I don’t want to say it was supposed to happen that way, but that year, we were supposed to win the league as Kaizer Chiefs since I was there.

“But I left and that didn’t happen and a lot of people say it was because of me, which is fine. I understand and I also try and explain to them that there’s a lot of players. There were a lot of us. It’s a team sport – it’s team based.

“I did contribute my bit for that season and my agent couldn’t agree on terms unfortunately,” Mido added.

The University of Pretoria youth product dismissed rumours that he has hunged up his boots.

“Bra Rob, it’s a very simple, simple answer,” he added.

“I’m a baller. I’m still a baller. I love football, I’m passionate about it.

“I’m still club-hunting and I believe something will come up.

“We’re working very hard. My agent is still out there trying to make sure we get the right deal.

“I still have a lot in my legs, so not about to hang my boots just yet.

“I’ve always said I love this game too much. At this point in time money is the last thing on my mind,” he further said.

The Tembisa-born star went on to win two league titles with Sundowns as well as the MTN8, before joining Usuthu.
