Mashego Excited About Return To Form As AFCON Looms

Mamelodi Sundowns defender Terrence Mashego appears to be returning to form at the right time ahead of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

Mashego, 27, was an ever-present figure under Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos during his time at Cape Town City – featuring in four FIFA World Cup qualifiers before his move to Sundowns – where injury curtailed his progress.

However, the pacey wing-back appears to be on the road back to top form with 15 appearances this season, while showcasing a dynamic performance in their 1-0 win over Pyramids in Cairo on Tuesday evening.

“I’m excited because it was my third 90 minutes, so slowly but surely I can feel I’m getting back my groove, so for me, it’s important, I’m happy,” Mashego said.

The former TS Galaxy man admits the group, where Sundowns are in second place behind TP Mazmebe due to head-to-head record, has been incredibly challenging.

“The first 45 minutes, we managed to play, we managed to create chances, but the second half was tough, they pressed us high and it was challenging, we couldn’t find our rhythm, our passes but away from home, the important thing is three points,” Mashego said.

“Our group is difficult because all the teams won home games, so now it’s about us making sure we win the away games, because we only have one home game against Mazembe, who won so this group is a bit difficult.”

Sundowns now focus on Cape Town City on Sunday afternoon at the DHL Stadium (15h30).
