New Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorin has addressed the comparisons to his iconic compatriot, Jose Mourinho.
Amorim was lured to United as the successor of Erik ten Hag after an indifferent start to the 2024/25 season and is ranked as one of the most promising coaches in world football.
The 39-year-old turned around the fortunes of Sporting Lisbon during his four-year spell winning two league titles and two domestic cups, ending their 19-year wait for league honours.
It’s been a meteoric rise for Amorim from early retirement in professional football, to spending a week-long internship under Mourinho at Manchester United back in 2017 – to since then becoming the most expensive manger in football history when Sporting spent €10 million to lure him from Braga.
“First thing: not just in me but all the Portuguese coaches, he showed we can be the best in the world and this is something different in a small country,” Amorim said, as per Manchester Evening News.
“This can put a stamp on everybody but I‘m different from Mourinho. I’m a different person but I remember that time.
“You look at Mourinho and you felt he can win everywhere. It’s not the same thing. He was European champion, I’m not European champion! But I’m a different guy in a different moment.
“Football nowadays is different and I think I am the right person in this moment. I am a young guy, I understand the players, so I try to use that to help my players like Mourinho did in that era at Chelsea.
“If you remember the young guys like (Frank) Lampard, these kinds of players. Nowadays it’s so much different and I think I am the right guy in this moment.”
