Mamelodi Sundowns started the season off with a bang as they Cape Town City 2-0 in the first game of the DStv Premiership season, played at the DHL Stadium on Friday night.
It was a match-up between the two clubs who finished first and second last season, and three debutants started the game, with Ronwen Williams getting his first chance for Sundowns, while Eric Tinkler gave starts to Marc Van Heerden and teenage striker Luke Daniels.
It was a positive start to the game for both sides, cheered on by a packed stadium, dominated by Masandawana fans, but while Sundowns did the early threatening, the first shot at goal came from City’s Darwin Gonzalez, however, his 9th-minute effort was wayward. Haashim Domingo had a chance for the visitors in the 13th minute, but his shot was also off target. Aubrey Modiba had an opportunity two minutes later, but slipped as he shot, and his effort went wide of Hugo Marques’ goal.
Marc Van Heerden’s cross-come-shot was neatly dealt with by Williams in the 16th minute, while Thabo Nodada missed a great chance in the 20th minute after some good work by Khanyisa Mayo down the right.
Domingo shot over again a minute later, while the former Capetonian missed another chance just after the half-hour mark. City’s young striker Daniels went close in the 35th minute, but couldn’t direct his header on target. Van Heerden’s effort three minutes later was on target, but straight at Williams.
Mayo shot over just before the break and at half-time, it remained goalless.
