Stellenbosch FC have announced the signing of former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Darrel Matsheke to bolster their midfield options after the late departure of Sibongiseni Mthethwa.
The 24-year-old was released from Chiefs in the off-season and was now snapped up by the Cape Winelands side to replace Mthethwa.
Following the departure of Mthethwa, Matsheke, one of Chiefs’ stars during his academy days who had loan spells with Uthongathi and Moroka Swallows after breaking into the senior team, has now landed a move to Stellies.
“Matsheke has signed with Stellenbosch FC on a free transfer following the conclusion of his contract with Kaizer Chiefs at the end of last season, and arrives in the Cape Winelands as a welcomed addition to the club’s midfield,” the club stated on Wednesday.
Stellies head coach Steve Barker added: “Darrel adds quality and depth to our midfield positions, specifically as a defensive midfielder.
“He is technically sound, plays with a lot of energy and intensity, and has the ability to break down attacks, and once he has done that he has the ability to then progress the ball either through the quality of his passing or by carrying the ball.
“We welcome him to the SFC family and are confident that he will add much value to our squad.”
