Manchester City head coach Pep Guardiola says Africa has produced many good players ahead of his side’s clash with Wydad Athletic Club.
The Citizens will kick off their 2025 FIFA Club World Cup campaign against the Moroccan giants, who have both Thembinkosi Lorch and Cassius Mailula in their squad for the tournament.
The match kicks off at 18:00 (SAST) on Wednesday, with City the overwhelming favourites. However, Guardiola praised the level of African players ahead of tonight’s clash.
“The quality of African players always has been there, not just in terms of physicality, [but] the skills that they have,” he said during his pre-match press conference.
“I have a huge respect… Always people say with this continent it’s physicality, they’re strong when they arrive, tactics, culture and the skills. The skills will make them step up.
“Look how many, many, many African players – North or South – are playing already in Europe in the big, big clubs! There are a lot! And that means they are really good players…”
Italian giants Juventus and United Arab Emirates’ Al Ain are the other two teams in Group G.
