Ahead of Saturday’s World Cup quarter-final in Miami, Harry Kane was asked the question on everyone’s mind: who is better between himself and Erling Haaland? His answer was pure respect – with a razor-sharp edge.

Kane faced the inevitable question in Friday’s press conference: how do you stop the Norway supestar Haaland – who has plundered seven goals in his debut World Cup.

“Erling has been incredible,” Kane said. “Physically, he’s a machine. His finishing is at the highest level, and obviously his goal-scoring record speaks for itself.”

‘You can’t compare us’

But Kane pushed back on the comparison talk. “I see myself as a different player, although I score the same goals. I like to be a little more involved. I don’t think he’s one to compare ourselves.”

He ended with a smile; and a clear agenda for Saturday. “I respect him a lot as a player, as a fellow professional. Obviously, I’m hoping he has a quiet day tomorrow, but I think his overall performance over these recent years speaks for itself.”
