Thomas Tuchel has warned that Argentina will arrive at the semi-final carrying the same emotional intensity and hunger that carried them to glory in Qatar, but insists his own side will match that fire with a steel of its own.
Speaking at the pre-match press conference, the England head coach did not shy away from praising the threat posed by Lionel Scaloni’s men, many of whom he knows well on a personal level from his time in club football.

“I know some of the players, I coached some of the players,” Tuchel said. “I can sense it. You can see it. They have this kind of edge. You can sense it when they’re going a goal down, when matches are tight.”
For Tuchel, what makes this Argentina side so dangerous is not just individual quality but the continuity running through the squad. The core of the group that lifted the World Cup four years ago remains largely intact, and Tuchel believes that shared history is a weapon in itself.
“They’re almost the same group as four years ago,” he explained. “You can see the cohesion; you can see the sacrifice that they put into it. They believe in their style. And their style is a very emotional style. It was in Qatar and it is now.”
‘The are field by history’
The German tactician also touched on the deeper motivation driving Argentina; a nation for whom football and history are inseparably linked.
Tuchel suggested that weight of legacy adds another layer to an already formidable opponent.
“And, of course, history … they are also fuelled by that,” he said. “They are fuelled by history; it means a lot to them. So, this is what we basically expect, and what we are up against.
“But we are also emotional, we have the grit, we have the mentality that it takes to go up against it,” he said. “And we are ready for it.”
With both sides now bracing for a semi-final billed as a collision of history, emotion, and cohesion, Tuchel’s message was simple: England will not be intimidated by the occasion – they intend to embrace it.
