Messi Comments On Copa Victory
Lionel Messi has commented on lifting the Copa America with Argentina after finally securing his first major international trophy.
The 34-year-old and his teammates beat Brazil 1-0 in the final thanks to a first-half goal by Angel Di Maria.
Argentina lifted their first international trophy since 1993 and it was also Messi’s first ever after previously losing four final with the Albiceleste.
After the game, a much-relieved Messi opened up on how much this victory meant to him.
“I needed to get the thorn out (from my side) of not being able to achieve something with the national team,” Messi said, as cited by Marca.
“I was close for many years, I knew at some point it was going to happen. I’m grateful to God for giving me this moment against Brazil in the final, and in this country.”
Overall, Agentina lifted their 15th Copa America title, while Messi has claimed his 36th trophy in senior football.
