Inter Miami captain Lionel Messi has provided a rare glimpse into his relationship with long-time rival Cristiano Ronaldo, declaring he is not friends with his superstar rival.
The legendary duo has dominated football for over a decade to become the sport’s most decorated players in history having scored almost 2,000 goals between them for club and country.
CR7 currently plies his trade in the Saudi Pro League with Al-Nassr while Messi is on the books at MLS outfit Miami, with the latter admitting that he’s unlikely to ever share a close friendship with the UEFA Nations League winner, only because they hardly get a chance to talk.
“I have a lot of respect and admiration for Cristiano Ronaldo and for the career he’s had and continues to have, because he’s still competing at the highest level,” Messi told DSports.
“The competition with him was on the pitch. Each of us wanted to do the best for our team. Obviously, as always, everything stayed on the field.
“Off the pitch, we are two normal people. We’re not friends obviously because we don’t spend time together, but we’ve always treated each other with a lot of respect.”
