SA Opponents France Announce Olymics Squad

France, who are in Group A alongside South Africa, have announced a star-studded squad for the upcoming Tokyo Olympics.

The European nation qualified after finishing in fourth place at the 2019 UEFA European U21 Championship and will face David Notoane’s men in Tokyo.

Despite talk ahead of the tournament that Kylian Mbappe might be part of the squad, the 2018 FIFA World Cup winner was not included in the final 18-man squad.

Instead, Arsenal defender William Saliba made the selection, as well as Chelsea’s Malang Sarr – both players spent the 2019/20 away on loan at OGC Nice and Porto.

In midfielder, teenage sensation Eduardo Camavinga, who has been linked with a move to Real Madrid, is the standout name, while World Cup winner Florian Thauvin is one of the overaged players.

Upfront, Andre-Pierre Gignac, 35, might be the biggest surprise in the squad.

France will face SA’s U23 side in their second Group A fixture on 25 July.
