The South African Football Association (SAFA) and Bundesliga International have officially entered into a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at transforming the local football landscape.
The partnership, which establishes a long-term framework for collaboration, focuses on five key pillars: youth development, commercial strategy, fan engagement, media training, and technical expertise.

A central feature of this agreement is the launch of Bundesliga Dream South Africa – “a flagship project designed to support the development of elite young talent.” In a first-of-its-kind initiative for the continent, the South African Under-16 national team will travel to Germany from 15–25 May.
During the tour, the youngsters will train and compete against the academies of SV Werder Bremen and DSC Arminia Bielefeld. Adding local flavor to the trip, Bafana Bafana legend Delron Buckley will join the squad in Bielefeld to provide coaching mentorship.
The Bundesliga’s Johannesburg-based office is deepening its South African footprint with an upcoming post-season tour by RB Leipzig.
This follows a pattern of high-level engagement from German sides, including previous clinics by Werder Bremen and FC Augsburg’s recent international tour, further connecting local fans with world-class football.
SAFA CEO Lydia Monyepao hailed the partnership, noting its importance for technical growth.
“The Bundesliga is one of the top five leagues in the world, so the learnings and exchanges are vital for the technical development of our youth structures,” said SAFA CEO Lydia Monyepao.
“The partnership will allow our teams to execute their talent on a global stage and prepare for upcoming tournaments, ensuring necessary support and guidance from the Bundesliga and their clubs.”
Meanwhile, Peer Naubert, Chief Commercial Officer of Bundesliga Media said, “As football globalises, long-term relevance is built by contributing to the long-term development of the game.”
“This Memorandum of Understanding with the South African Football Association reflects that approach. Together, we are strengthening football in the Rainbow Nation by developing talent, supporting structures and creating pathways from grassroots to the professional stage.
“The Bundesliga is already the most active and fastest-growing European league in South Africa, and this collaboration is an important step in continuing that journey with a long-term perspective.”
