Why Percy Tau Is Not In SA Olympics Squad
Many South Africans expected Percy Tau to be named in the Olympics squad but here is why he wasn’t selected as one of the overaged players.
Tau has experienced the same problem that Liverpool superstar Mohamed Salah faced. Both players wanted to take part in the Olympics, but both were not released by their clubs.
Notoane explained Tau’s situation in iDiski Times, edition 23, already when he confirmed that the 27-year-old wanted to be part of the squad, while Brighton want him to remain in England for their pre-season ahead of the final year of his contract.
“With Percy there has been a lot of in-depth discussions around his situation with Brighton, at the club,” Notoane told iDiski Times senior writer Velile Mnyandu.
“I spoke to him personally as well and he is very, very committed to wanting to go to the Olympics.
“(But) he is also committed to want to make an impact at his club in the EPL, which is the biggest league in the world at the moment in terms of commercial value and attraction of foreign based players.
“He has spoken to his club and they are still remaining steadfast they want him to prove himself for the next coming season which is his final year of his contract.”
Ultimately, Tau did not make the squad and it remains to be seen whether he can now use the extra-time with his club to take part in a full pre-season and secure a place in Graham Potter’s starting XI.
