Wydad Coach Makes Bold Al Ahly Claim
Wydad Casablanca coach Faouzi Benzarti has made the bold claim that Esperance de Tunis will knock Pitso Mosimane’s Al Ahly out of the CAF Champions League.
The 71-year-old, who won the competition with Esperance in 1994, has guided Moroccan giants Wydad into the last four of this year’s competition.
However, while his side will be taking on Kaizer Chiefs in the other semi-final, Benzarti insisted that his former team Esperance are in better form than Mosimane’s defending champions.
“Tunisia’s Esperance is better than their semi-final opponents Al Ahly, who are the African Champions right now,” Benzarti told Tunisian Radio Mosaique.
“Al Ahly weren’t convincing at all during their encounter against Mamelodi Sundowns in the first leg of the quarter-finals despite the win and the result doesn’t reflect Al Ahly.
“They remain a great team, but Esperance will be able to decide who reaches the final round of the Champions League as Al Ahly is not at their best, despite the results they’ve achieved.”
Benzarti has a rich coaching history, in particular in his home country Tunisia as well as in Morocco.
He has won one CAF Champions League, two CAF Super Cups (1994 and 2018), two CAF Confederations Cups (2006 and 2015) and also reached the 2013 final at the FIFA Club World Cup with Raja Casablanca.
His side will take on Kaizer Chiefs on 18 or 19 June with the second leg to be played on 25 or 26 June.
