Mngqithi – It’s Not A Title Decider

While Mamelodi Sundowns can win the DStv Premiership if they beat SuperSport United on Wednesday, Manqoba Mngqithi says they are not looking at the game as a title decider.

The Sundowns co-head coach says that they are focussed on the process, and this match is their second match in the last cycle of five games.

Mngqithi explains they had targeted 12 points in that final cycle, and so far have three after beating TS Galaxy in their last league game.

“For us, it’s always important to focus on our process,” Mngqithi told the club’s media department.

“And according to our process, this is the second match of the last cycle of five games. And we have won the first one. So all our attention is on trying to make sure that we achieve our desired targets in the last four matches.

“And it just happens that SuperSport can decide the championship, but the intention is to try and get the number of points that we have targeted.

“And as it is, now we are short of nine points in this cycle and it will be nice if we can get 12. So that’s basically what we are trying to look for.”

Mngqithi adds that following the process is key, as he does not want to see the team lower their standards once the title has been won.

“We are not looking, and putting a lot of pressure on the players to look at this game as a title decider, because we still want them to give the same energy even in the next three matches because for us, it is very important to win every match that we play, and to try and achieve our targets,” he explained.

“And if we get 12 points, it will also help us in some of the cycles where we did not do well. We will have a chance to go and drop some points there.”

“And that is for the legacy of the players to know how they won the league, how much of a fight was it and what did they do in the six cycles of five matches each so that at least we know, in the future, where should we improve and where is our benchmark.”
