Bafana Remain Unbeaten At Cosafa Cup
Bafana Bafana have remained unbeaten at the Cosafa Cup and ensured that Zambia, one of the tournament favourites and defending champions, got knocked out following a goalless draw.
Bafana had a first chance after 11 minutes when Thabang Sibanyoni met a crosses with a header that landed at the top of the net.
Ten minutes later Masilake Phohlongo had South Africa’s next opportunity as he moved from the right wing inside but his left-footed shot just went past the goal.
The first half, though, was low on highlights, as both Bafana and Zambia failed to create any real scoring opportunities.
Salulani Phri came closest for Zambia but his flying header from inside the box went past the post in the 45th minute and the game remained goalless at the break.
South Africa oddly started the second half with just 10 men after Monnapule Saleng replaced Masilake Phohlongo but was only allowed onto the pitch in the 46th minute.
However, the game remained low on highlights, as Saleng saw a shot fly over the bar in the 65th minute.
Zambia had the ball in the back of the net in the 71st minute but it was ruled out due to an offside decision in the build-up.
Chipolopolo intensified their efforts in the last 15 minutes but failed to really trouble Lincoln Vyver in the Bafana goal. Zambia had a great opportunity in the 91st minute but new Kaizer Chiefs signing blocked the shot.
South Africa finished Group A at the top with 10 points and without conceding a single goal, while eSwatini finished in second place with seven points after holding Botswana to a 1-1 draw.
Bafana will now face Mozambique in the semi-final and eSwatini will have to take on Senegal.
