After a Percy Tau goal was incorrectly ruled out in Bafana Bafana’s 1-0 win over Ghana on Monday, coach Hugo Broos said VAR should be implemented in important games like this.
Tau’s legitimate goal was overruled in the first half when the assistant referee adjudged the Al Ahly player to be off-side, but replays showed Tau was definitely on-side. At the time the score was 0-0.
Broos says, that in games as important as these World Cup qualifiers, VAR should be used, and had Bongokuhle Hlongwane not sealed the victory late on, that error could have cost them the three points.
“Yes. I think in such important games there has to be a VAR,” Broos said in the post match press conference.
“The goal can decide or not decide again.
“And then, as you said, if the goal of Percy was a goal, and imagine that it’s 0-0, yes, then we don’t win the game?
“So therefore, in such games, in such important games, I’d like to have the VAR.”
The win saw Bafana move to top of Group G, on 4 points, one ahead of Ghana.
Zimbabwe are third on one point, while Ethiopia are yet to get off the mark. Ethiopia host Zimbabwe on Tuesday.
