Kaizer Chiefs got back to winning ways as they beat Swallows 3-1, while there were also wins for Golden Arrows and Royal AM in Sunday afternoon’s DStv Premiership fixtures.
Swallows 1-3 Kaizer Chiefs
Chiefs piled the pressure on Brandon Truter and Swallows as they won 3-1 at the Dobsonville Stadium, with Khama Billiat scoring a brace.
It was a windy Dobsonville that greeted the teams, and both sides took a while to adapt to the conditions.
Jody February denied Bernard Parker from close range in the 13th minute, while a minute later Swallows had a good chance on the attack but, Kamohelo Mahlatsi was unable to control a Monnapule Saleng cross.
Billiat went wide in the 24th minute, while Mahlatsi’s effort two minutes later, took a strong deflection, and Daniel Akpeyi was able to gather comfortably.
Billiat was off target again with a long range attempt in the 33rd minute, but Keagan Dolly was not to be denied in the 43rd minute as he poked it past an advancing February after being set up by Billiat.
Happy Mashiane was off target in the 45th minute, but moments later Billiat blasted in from close range after being set up by Ramahlwe Mphahlele and at the break Chiefs led 2-0.
Billiat got his second in the 53rd minute to make it 3-0, as he dribbled through the defence before beating February.
Akpeyi made a good save to deny Lebogang Mokoena in the 58th minute, while Saleng was off target two minutes later.
Mokoena pulled one back in the 61st minute, with an unorthodox finish to Grant Margeman’s deep cross to beat Akpeyi.
And while Swallows tried to get back into the game, Stuart Baxter’s team managed the game well to pick up all three points, and move up to second on the log, eight points behind leaders Mamelodi Sundowns.
Golden Arrows 3-2 Baroka
Golden Arrows beat a tenacious Baroka 3-2 at the Princess Magogo Stadium.
Thubelihle Magubane put the home team into the lead in the 13th minute, heading in to make it 1-0, Baroka feeling it was off-side.
It was 2-0 in the 28th minute, as Pule Mmodi finished off after being set up by Mike Gumede.
Baroka pulled a goal back in the 68th minute, with Sekela Sithole scoring after an assist from Richard Mbulu.
However things got tougher for Baroka with 20 minutes to go when they were reduced to ten men, with Mbulu getting a red card.
But they still managed to draw level as Denwin Farmer headed in an equaliser in the 80th minute.
But it was short-lived as Arrows were awarded a penalty for a foul on Sibusiso Conco two minutes later and Nkosinathi Sibisi made no mistake to make it 3-2.
Royal AM 1-0 Stellenbosch
Royal AM beat Stellenbosch 1-0 at the Chatsworth Stadium to leapfrog the Western Cape side on the log.
Despite numerous opportunities in the first half, especially from the visitors, it remained goalless at half-time.
And it was Royal AM who would grab the lead, as Tebogo Potsane raced clear just before the hour mark and finished past Sage Stephens.
It was Stellenbosch’s second successive defeat after being unbeaten for their first eleven games, and they now drop down to fourth, with AM up to third.
Maritzburg United 1-1 AmaZulu
Maritzburg United grabbed a late equaliser as they drew 1-1 with AmaZulu in a KZN derby at the Harry Gwala Stadium.
AmaZulu grabbed the lead in the tenth minute as Luvuyo Memela got to the end of an Andre De Jong cross, and Memela’s touch was enough to beat Marcel Engelhardt.
Memela’s goal was the difference at the break, and while Maritzburg pushed hard for an equaliser, Benni McCarthy’s team tried to manage the game.
But with five minutes to go Amadou Soukouna created space for himself outside the box and his powerful effort flew past Veli Mothwa.
