Chiefs Targeting CAF Champions League

Kaizer Chiefs believe they have what it takes to return to the CAF Champions League next season, coach Arthur Zwane believes.

Chiefs finished as runners-up to Al Ahly in Africa’s elite club competition last season but their eighth-placed league finish meant they weren’t competing in the current campaign.

But this season, without the gruelling schedule of travelling the continent they’ve fared better in the league under head coach Stuart Baxter and Zwane during his absence within their Covid-19 outbreak.

Speaking to the club’s official website, ‘10111’ admitted it’s one of their main goals of the 2021/22 season after showcasing their capabilities in their maiden run towards the knockout stages.

“One of the things that we want to achieve is to go back to the CAF Champions League. That’s the ultimate goal,” Zwane said.

“If we can achieve that as a team then it will give us a better position in terms of competing at that level again and to come back home now and see who we can add in terms of playing personnel.

“So that we know we have an equally good squad that can compete on the African continent and also domestically.”

“We can only do ourselves a favour by focusing on ourselves, more than on what other teams are doing, and to take one game at a time.

“If we don’t put ourselves under pressure we will be able to get the results in each and every game that we play.”

Amakhosi are fourth in the South African top-flight at the mid-season break, 16 points behind league leaders Mamelodi Sundowns with three games in hand – subject to the appeal to the PSL over their postponed December fixtures.
