Olde Riekerink – We Outplayed Them

Cape Town City Head Coach Jan Olde Riekerink says his team deserved to beat Baroka and were unlucky to only get a 1-1 draw on Sunday.

City dominated the game at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium, but a late own goal from Terrence Mashego robbed City of the three points.

City had taken the lead earlier in the game through Surprise Ralani.

“I think overall we missed two points in the game,” Olde Riekerink said after the game.

“I think the first half we played well, we were the dominant team, but there a was a little bit of a lack of movement from the first line.”

“We created the chances, the two-three chances that are needed to break a team like Baroka, because they are very defensive, but we didn’t score them.”

A few tactical changes in the second half saw City take the lead through Ralani.

“I think after that we were very stable, we knew that they would play with the long balls, and they didn’t manage to shoot once (on target) at our goal the whole game, but unlucky we scored an own goal.”

“But even after that, in that time especially the last ten minutes, we had three very good opportunities to even finish the game.”

“I think my team was very competitive. Against the team of Baroka you have to really stand up as a team to defend a wave of very physical strong players. I must give my team a very big compliment.”

“We were unlucky to get the 1-1, we deserved to win because we outplayed them, we played very well.”
