Royal AM Advance, Sekhukhune Out

Royal AM beat Cape Town City, Mathaithai beat NC Pro’s, Platinum City Rovers upset Sekhukhune United while Free State Stars lost to Sinenkani in the Nedbank Cup round of 32.

Royal AM and Free State ABC Motsepe League side Mathaithai FC won in regulation time, however the other two afternoon games required penalties to decide the winners.

Royal AM 2-1 Cape Town City

Royal AM came from a goal down to beat Cape Town City 2-1 at Chatsworth Stadium.

Khanyisa Mayo, last season’s young player of the Nedbank Cup, opened the scoring for City in the ninth minute, as he blasted in from the left of goal.

It was an entertaining first half with the action swinging from end to end, Taariq Fielies clearing Thabo Matlaba’s attempt off the line in the 21st minute. But at the break City led 1-0.

However Royal AM were level five minutes into the second after an own goal was conceded by Relebogile Mokhouane.

And a second goal in three minutes turned the result around, as Lantshene Phalane scored from a free kick that gave Hugo Marques no chance.

Victor Letsoalo could have increased the lead on the hour mark, but his shot went across the face of goal. Tebogo Pontsane went wide in the 70th minute, while Marques had to make a reflect save to deny Letsoalo in the 75th minute.

NC Professionals 0-2 Mathaithai

Mathaithai advanced after beat NC Pro’s 2-0 at GWK Park in Kimberley.

Teboho Modise put Mathaithai up in the 25th minute, before Sabata Mamele doubled the lead in the 32nd to give the Free State side a comfortable lead, which they held onto.

Platinum City Rovers 1-1 (AET) Sekhukhune United – City Rovers win shootout 3-2

Sekhukhune captain Yusuf Maart opened the scoring for the DStv Premiership outfit in just the third minute, and the score remained 1-0 throughout the ninety, only for City Rovers to grab an equaliser in stoppage time, to take it into extra time.

With no winner coming in stoppage time, the match went to penalties, and City Rovers caused up an upset to win 3-2 in the shootout.

Sinenkani 1-1 (AET) Free State Stars – Sinenkani win shootout

It was goalless in the first 45 in the Eastern Cape, however Vincent Mkhize gave Sinenkani the lead deep into the second half.

However just before full time Moeketsi Sekola levelled matters from the penalty spot and extra time was needed.

Sinenkani missed a chance to take the lead in extra time when Mkhize was unable to convert a penalty eight minutes in. With no more goals in 120 minutes, penalties decided the fixture.

And it was the minnows who prevailed winning the shootout 10-9.
