Sono Recalls Pitso Fallout For ‘Parking The Bus’

The legendary Jomo Sono has revealed he had a bust-up with Pitso Mosimane after a game in which he parked the bus to secure a victory.

Mosimane was honoured with a Doctorate at the University of Johannesburg last week for his contributions to African football.

The three-time CAF Champions League winning coach was alongside the likes of Sono, Dr Danny Jordaan, Molefi Olifant, Florent Ibenge, Aliou Cisse amongst the high-profile football figures in attendance.

And ‘Bra J’, as he’s affectionately known, admits he feels proud that one of his products has reached these heights of success, even though it’s not always been a plain-sailing relationship between the pair over the years.

“I feel very proud to be honest, like any father when your child graduates, you know you’re proud, I come a long way with him you know and people think because I spotted him, groomed him when he played for Cosmos, they think we never had quarrels on the way, we had [them].

“I remember when we beat him in one of the cups, he lost it and attacked me, he said what kind of football are you playing? I said I don’t have money to buy players, we beat them on penalties after playing 0-0.

“I parked the bus for 90 minutes and he was very upset with me and attacked me, ‘why do you play football this’? I don’t have money to buy players, so I had to defend. And who won the trophy? It was me…

“I could see from that time, that this kid would go far because he wanted to win, he wanted to win at all times you know. That attitude of wanting to win hasn’t changed, it has made him what he is today and congratulations to him.”

Sono went on to laud Mosimane’s achievement on the day, stating it was an historic occasion in the history of South African sport.

“It’s a big day for football to see one of our ex-players and coach being honoured while he is still alive, you know I’ve been the one who’s always speaking about this, we’re only honoured when we’re dead,” Sono said.

“When you dead you can’t hear anything but I think it’s a great day for Pitso, it’s a great day for South African football, it motivates the other players, the other coaches to work harder. If they see something like this happen to Pitso, being honoured, while he is still alive.”
