Both of Sunday’s DSTV Premiership games, Orlando Pirates versus Swallows, and Bloemfontein Celtic versus AmaZulu, ended in 1-1 draws.
Orlando Pirates 1-1 Swallows FC
Swallows scored in stoppage time as the original derby against Orlando Pirates ended 1-1 at the Orlando Stadium.
It was a good old-fashioned battle in the first half between Pirates and Celtic, and the wet weather added to the fight. While Swallows probably had the better of the first half, neither team were able to find the back of the net.
Wayne Sandilands did well to deny Ruzaigh Gamildien the opener in the 55th minute, after it looked like Swallows’ leading goalscorer would get the opener.
The veteran goalkeeper, who is reportedly doubling as goalkeeper coach, made a few good saves to keep Swallows out.
Pirates grew in confidence and looked to have a penalty in the 70th minute, but instead, despite initially pointing to the spot, Fortune Makaringe was given a yellow card by Jelly Chavani for simulation.
But in the 84th minute Pirates were in the lead when Ben Motshwari’s first time volley flew in past Virgil Vries.
Kamohelo Mahlatsi grabbed a stoppage time equaliser for Swallows, to keep their unbeaten record this season.
Bloemfontein Celtic 1-1 AmaZulu
Celtic and AmaZulu played to a 1-1 draw in their DSTV Premiership clash in Bloemfontein.
After a number of missed opportunities from the visitors, Celtic went into the lead in the 33rd minute when Mzwanele Mahashe headed past Siyabonga Mbatha.
Celtic were awarded a penalty in the 45th minute, when Tsepo Masilela was adjudged to have fouled Ndumiso Mabena. Mabena stood up to take the spot kick but blasted over and it remained 1-0 at halftime.
Augustine Mulenga scored a cracker in the 64th minute to level matters, blasting in past Jackson Mabokgwane.
A drew for Benni McCarthy in his second match in charge of Usuthu.
