Sundowns Finally Lose As Belouizdad Secure CAFCL Last 8 Spot
Mamelodi Sundowns unbeaten run of 28 games in all competitions came to an end on Friday afternoon after they suffered a disappointing 2-0 loss to CR Belouizdad in the CAF Champions League at Loftus Stadium on Friday afternoon.
It was the first defeat for Sundowns in the group, and their first loss in 28 games in all competitions.
While Sundowns had already qualified as group winners, the visitors were playing for a result to ensure their spot, and both teams will now advance to the last eight.
Mamelodi Sundowns 0-2 CR Belouizdad
Aubrey Modiba’s deflected effort in the 13th minute almost caused problem for Belouizdad goalkeeper Toufik Moussaoui.
In the 26th minute Hlompho Kekana tried a long range effort, but his shot flew over the goal.
Belouizdad grabbed the lead in the 29th minute, as Ricardo Goss made a mistake and his pass went directly to Amir Sayoud, who took full advantage of the goalkeeper’s error and put the ball in the back of the net.
While Sundowns were creating chances, they weren’t goal threatening, Thapelo Morena shooting over in the 42nd minute.
Kekana’s ambitious effort in the 44th minute did finally find the target, but Moussaoui was able to make a comfortable save.
And it was the Algerians who found the net again just before half-time, as Ahmed Gasmi ran unmarked into the box and headed in a good cross from Zinelaabidine Boulakkhoua. Again the error came from a defensive lapse, as a poor clearance out was thrown in quickly, and with the defence out of position it resulted in the goal.
The second half followed a similar pattern to the first, with Sundowns dominating possession, but the Algerians were well organised in defence.
Moussaoui pulled off a good save in the 55th minute as substitute Lesedi Kapinga went close.
Time ticked on, and while the home team continued to see more of the ball, nothing was happening in the final third.
The Algerians hanging on for a win that secures their qualification alongside Sundowns.
