Mamelodi Sundowns’ president Tlhopane Motsepe has addressed questions whether Sundowns Ladies will play with a star on their shirts going forward after winning the CAF Women’s Champions League.
Sundowns Ladies arrived at OR Tambo airport on Sunday morning where they were welcomed by several 100 fans after lifting the CAFWCL title on Friday thanks to a 2-0 win over Hasaacas Ladies at the 30 June stadium in Cairo.
Many fans are now wondering whether Downs Ladies’ team will play with a star on their shirt, as usual for the men’s teams after winning the CAF Champions League, or whether the club’s teams might even play with two stars going forward.
Motsepe, though, insisted that the club hasn’t spoke about this topic with the South Africa Football Association or the Premier Soccer League yet.
“We will start the discussion with the relevant organisations in terms of the star and what regulations will be around it,” he said on Sunday.
“Obviously at this point, there is no regulation because this is the first time that this is being achieved.
“We couldn’t start these discussions a few weeks ago because we were focussed on giving that energy to the ladies. It would be too presumptuous to be speaking about a star before we are even in the final.
“So now that we have ourselves, champions that deserve to be celebrated. Now we can engage with the organising bodies to see how best we can do this new way of celebrating women’s football.”
