Stellenbosch FC head coach Steve Barker has insisted he is used to transfer speculation around this time of the year and feels his club can now offer their own players a great appeal to stay.
Barker guided Stellies to their first-ever trophy last season, winning the Carling Knockout Cup on penalties against TS Galaxy, while also finishing in a third place in the league to qualify for the CAF Confederations Cup.
Over the last few seasons, Stellies lost key players like Ashley Du Preez, Zitha Kwinika, Junior Mendieta and Sibongiseni Mthethwa, but they managed to keep hold of their main stars this window so far.
However, in recent days the club has received offers for captain Deano Van Rooyen and left-back Fawaaz Basadien, as reported by this publication, but Barker insists he’s not having sleepless nights.
“I’ve been long enough in the game and it is that time of the season where there is always talk and clubs maybe interested in your players,” he said during the MTN8 launch.
“But I think our players are happy where they are. We have shown them that we can win medals and trophies.
“We’ve shown competitiveness in the league, we’re playing now in the [CAF] intercontinental club competition.
“The players are excited to be part of that journey to help the club continue to grow, and continue to be successful.”
Stellies kick off their 2024/25 on Sunday when they will host TS Galaxy in the MTN8 quarter-final at Danie Craven Stadium. The game kicks off at 15:00.
