Kaizer Chiefs head coach Fernando Da Cruz has revealed why he didn’t start new signing Langelihle Phili in the MTN8 quarter-final against Golden Arrows on Sunday.

Phili, 21, joined Amakhosi last week on a long-term contract from Stellenbosch FC in a deal that also saw Ashley Du Preez and Given Msimago go the opposite way.

The youngster made his debut as a second half substitute replacing Nkosingiphile Ngcobo as the side was eliminated from the season-opening tournament by Arrows at FNB Stadium lasting just under 30 minutes.

Speaking through a translator after the game, Da Cruz said Phili isn’t at a satisfactory level yet that’s why the technical team is taking time with him.

“He’s happy about the performance of Phili today,” translated Da Cruz’s interpreter.

“But for him he’s not ready, not at 100% for the moment. So, we go step by step with him to be careful.”

Last season, Phili scored nine goals across 39 appearances for Stellenbosch, including seven in the Betway Premiership.

Chiefs already return to action on Wednesday when they will host Sekhukhune United at FNB Stadium, before Saturday’s much-anticipated clash against Mamelodi Sundowns at the same venue.
