Barker – We Didn’t Want Downs, But Did They Want Us?

Stellenbosch FC head coach Steve Barker says he would’ve liked to avoid Mamelodi Sundowns in the Nedbank Cup quarter-final, but insisted the Masandawana probably also hoped for an easier tie.

The Cape Winelands side were drawn against the defending champions in the quarter-finals, which kick off this weekend.

It’s not even a month since these two sides faced each other in a DStv Premiership encounter that ended in a 1-1 draw at Danie Craven Stadium, when Stellies ended Downs’ 15-match winning run in the league.

Downs have since dropped points ahead over the weekend, in their 0-0 draw with Swallows, but are still unbeaten in 23 games under Rulani Mokwena, while Stellenbosch have lost their last two games after a seven-game unbeaten run before.

“It’s a difficult one, we all have to be honest, it’s one team probably you didn’t wanna draw” Barker told the media.

“Not only we, who didn’t wanna draw them but at the same time I don’t think they want to draw us away from home. I think maybe that would be a draw they not have wanted.

“We’ve got nothing to lose, if we maintain the form that we have and continue to play the way we do we can get a really big crowd to come to watch two good teams that are on form.”
