Kaizer Chiefs playmaker Gaston Sirino aims to end the club’s 10-year trophy drought by overcoming rivals Orlando Pirates in the Nedbank Cup final on Saturday.
With hours left before the big final at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban, Amakhosi have an opportunity to bring back glory days by winning the Nedbank Cup and attacking midfielder Sirino has urged his teammates to have an edge over their rivals after narrowly losing last weekend.
“I am feeling good, it’s a good opportunity to win a trophy, which is what I am here for,” the Uruguayan told the club’s website.
“Everybody, including me, needs to take responsibility. We must play better than them, control the game. We played well against them last weekend but didn’t get the result we wanted.”
Chiefs have been creating chances but failing to convert them at the same time, they have been leaking goals at the back mostly from their own mistakes and Sirino made it clear that they need to minimize that.
“We have played well in many games, but we have also made mistakes that have cost us. We can’t afford that on Saturday. Our concentration has to be fully focused for the whole game. We have a great opportunity to make history and have a positive end to the season.”
With Amakhosi, the most supported club in the country, the pressure is the same also especially having not won a trophy in the last 10 years, but the Uruguayan admits that he likes the pressure.
“When you play for Kaizer Chiefs, it’s different to other clubs. The pressure is greater because the support is bigger and so are the expectations. I think we played quite well against Pirates [last Saturday], but our fans were rightly not happy with the outcome. We really want to win for our supporters. I am happy the stadium will be full. I like the pressure. We are preparing well to rise to the occasion.
“I want to do better. Sometimes, I have played well but with no assists or goals. I need to improve that, but football isn’t always like that, and you have to keep trying. Sometimes it can go your way, too.
“I try my best always because I want to win every game. As I said, things don’t go your way sometimes, but it is not through lack of effort. We know what this means to our fans, and we will go out there and fight until the last whistle.”
