SuperSport United head coach Gavin Hunt admits Cape Town City is as tough as they come but a more favourable draw as Dondol Stars last season didn’t help them either.
After 17 games played in the league this season City are second and SuperSport third, both on 30 points – the nearest challengers to Mamelodi Sundowns with a nine-point deficit.
With both sides looking to challenge for silverware with the league title seemingly slipping away again due to Sundowns two games in hand, it’s likely to be a fiery encounter.
“It’s the first round of the cup and it’s not an easy draw, Cape Town City, very competitive,” Hunt said ahead of the game.
“They sitting in the same region in the league as us, we’re expecting a tough game. Last season we didn’t do well with a draw [against Dondol Stars], but that didn’t go well.”
Hunt said the decision to field a weakened side last season, which led to an embarrassing exit against the third-tier side, was due for their desire to finish in the top-three and qualify for CAF inter-club competitions.
“I thought that team was strong enough to beat them, but we lost – but I did that for the benefit of the team, the benefit of the club.
“At the end of the day, it was the right decision, if we played Dondol tomorrow I would have done the same thing.”
Matsatsansa take on City at the Lucas Masterpieces Moripe Stadium tomorrow at 19h00.
